Boys & Men Get Eating Disorders Too: Diagnosing and Treating This Overlooked Population

About the event: Studies suggest up to 40% of people with eating disorders are boys & men, yet the harmful stereotype that eating disorders only occur in girls and women persists. Loved ones and healthcare providers are slow to recognize eating disorders in boys and men, resulting in years of unnecessary suffering. This presentation will bring together clinical expertise and lived experience to highlight how eating disorders present in males and what treatment looks like. Co Founder and Chief Clinical Officer at Equip, Dr. Erin Parks, will lead the presentation, with the support of Equip employees with lived experience both professionally and personally. Finally, there will be time for Q&A.

Erin Parks, PhD

Dr. Erin Parks is a renowned clinical psychologist, researcher, and entrepreneur with over 15 years of experience in the field of mental health, specializing in evidence-based treatment for eating disorders. As the Co-Founder and Chief Clinical Officer of Equip, Erin has been instrumental in transforming the landscape of eating disorder treatment through innovative, virtual care that is both accessible and effective. Her work at Equip focuses on ensuring that patients across the United States receive comprehensive care that leads to lasting recovery.

Before founding Equip, Erin served as the Director of Outreach and Admissions at the UC San Diego Eating Disorders Center, where she played a pivotal role in expanding and leading one of the most respected eating disorder programs in the world. Her extensive clinical experience spans inpatient, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient settings, where she has consistently advocated for high-quality, evidence-based treatment.

  • Assistant Professor & Director of Outreach and Admissions, UC San Diego Health (2014–2019)At UC San Diego, Erin was integral in the development and expansion of the Eating Disorders Center, overseeing programs that combined cutting-edge research with compassionate patient care. She also served as an Assistant Professor, where she contributed to the academic community through research and mentorship, focusing on advancing the understanding and treatment of eating disorders.

Pita Meanata is a Lead Peer Mentor with lived experience in recovery from an eating disorder. Pita is passionate about his work in supporting Equip patients and supervising other Equip mentors, drawing upon his diverse life experiences and unique background to form authentic and meaningful connections.

Linsey Henry

Linsey is a former first grade teacher with lived experience caring for her son, who was diagnosed with an eating disorder four years ago. After her son's recovery, she became passionate about helping others through their recovery and now works for Equip as Lead Family Mentor.
