 Binge eating disorder (BED) is one of the most common eating disorders in the U.S., affecting people of all genders, races, and ages. At the same time, the weight loss industry continues to boom, shaping societal norms and causing some patients and/or their parents to seek weight loss as part of BED treatment. The rise of GLP-1’s have only exacerbated this reality. In addition to providing an overview of binge eating disorder treatment and symptoms, this event will discuss an important factor in treatment: weight-neutral approaches and how they can lead to positive outcomes in combination with modalities like CBT-E and FBT.


 After participating in this session, attendees should be able to:

Describe the general symptoms and treatment for binge eating disorder (BED).

Explain how weight loss medications and societal pressures can be addressed within the treatment of BED.

Identify strategies for providing weight-neutral, evidence-based treatment for BED in pediatric and adult populations.

Eligible providers who attend the webinar will be eligible for up to 1 credit through ACCME or APA.

The Upside of Cognitive Dissonance: Using An Evidence-Based Modality to Challenge Appearance Ideals and Support Eating Disorder Patients (encore)

 Research indicates about 50% of all eating disorder patients also engage in substance misuse, compared to 9% of the general population. This presentation will provide an overview of best practices for screening, assessing, tracking, and providing psychoeducation around substance use disorders (SUDs) in patients with eating disorders. Participants will learn evidence-based tools and techniques to identify substance use issues, determine appropriate levels of care, and integrate SUD treatment into existing eating disorder protocols.


Identify validated screening and assessment tools to detect substance use disorders in eating disorder populations.

Describe a structured decision tree for determining risk levels and treatment plans based on assessment findings.

Explain core components of psychoeducation and skills training to address the unique needs of patients with co-occurring eating disorders and substance use issues.

Facilitating A Two-Pronged Recovery: Identifying and Treating Substance Use Disorders in Eating Disorder Patients

Eating disorders and Autism often co-occur; up to 37% of individuals with eating disorders also have Autism. Unfortunately, many clinicians and providers remain unaware of this common overlap, which can negatively impact the treatment experience and outcomes for these individuals. This presentation provides an overview of Autism and eating disorders, and how the two might present. It also discusses a variety of important considerations when working with this population, including cross-collaboration with other specialties and how to modify common eating disorder interventions to align with the needs of Autistic patients.

This talk reviewed available tools for screening eating disorders and discussed the pros and cons of using them in clinical practice. It also discussed gaps in the research, with an emphasis on tools needed for early detection in childhood and adolescence. Attendees will walk away with a better understanding of how to use current screening tools in practice, and what innovations are needed to ensure eating disorders are caught as early as possible.

Athletes are 2-3 times more likely to struggle with an eating disorder than their peers, yet they're less likely to receive a diagnosis. Research points to unique contributors like the emphasis on leanness, expected performance gains from weight changes, team weight checks, and sport-specialization at younger ages.
