 The presence of co-occurring conditions can complicate the treatment of eating disorders. A common case is with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In fact, as many as 35% of patients with eating disorders also have OCD, with particularly high rates for those diagnosed with anorexia nervosa and avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder. This presentation will provide an overview of why OCD and eating disorders seem to be so closely related and help providers differentiate between the two conditions. It will also offer guidance to providers on how to incorporate treatment of OCD into eating disorder recovery.


 After participating in this session, attendees should be able to:

Identify shared risk factors that link OCD and eating disorders.

Explain how to differentiate between OCD and eating disorders.

Describe considerations for determining how to sequence the treatment of OCD and an eating disorder.

Untangling OCD and Eating Disorders: Differentiating and Addressing These Closely-Related Conditions

 Research shows that peer support can improve quality of life and decrease psychiatric symptoms associated with a variety of conditions—including eating disorders. During eating disorder treatment, it’s essential for providers to build trust with a patient, but this can be exceedingly difficult. Mentorship adds an element of lived experience that helps enhance trust-building, and has a positive impact on both patient and clinician experience. 

This presentation will bring together voices of lived experience and clinical expertise to demonstrate the benefits of integrating mentorship into eating disorder treatment.


Attendees of this presentation will walk away with knowledge of the current research and practices around mentorship in eating disorder treatment, and an understanding of the impact it can have on their patients’ recovery.

The Power of Mentorship: Bridging Theory and Practice in Eating Disorder Recovery

Atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN) is a sub-diagnosis for patients who meet all the criteria for anorexia, except for being underweight. However, the term “atypical” is a glaring misnomer, as AAN affects up to 4.9% of people during their lifetime, whereas anorexia nervosa (AN) affects about 0.6%.

Atypical anorexia became a subtype of other specified feeding and eating disorder (OSFED) in 2013, leading to many common misconceptions about the severity of the illness and its best treatment approach. Using data from a large patient population receiving virtual treatment across the US, this presentation will explore these diagnostic labels, assess the severity and treatment trajectory for patients with AAN compared to AN, and propose considerations for future diagnostic clarifications.

Not so “Atypical” Anorexia: Clinical History, Diagnostic Considerations, and Treatment Approaches

Despite the adage that picky eating is “just a phase”, many children don’t “grow out” of their picky eating habits. This presentation will focus on helping healthcare providers understand when picky eating is harmless or developmentally appropriate - and when it crosses the line to become an eating disorder known as avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, or ARFID.

During this presentation, Dr. Jessie Menzel, clinical psychologist and VP of Program Development at Equip, will discuss the factors that drive extreme selective eating, and how an understanding of these factors can inform treatment.

Differentiate between picky eating and ARFID.

Identify warning signs of problematic picky/selective eating.

Describe assessment strategies for identifying picky/selective eating that meets criteria for ARFID.

Identify treatment goals for ARFID patients with selective eating.

Binge eating disorder (BED) is one of the most common eating disorders in the U.S., affecting people of all genders, races, and ages. At the same time, the weight loss industry continues to boom, shaping societal norms and causing some patients and/or their parents to seek weight loss as part of BED treatment. The rise of GLP-1’s have only exacerbated this reality. In addition to providing an overview of binge eating disorder treatment and symptoms, this event discusses an important factor in treatment: weight-neutral approaches and how they can lead to positive outcomes in combination with modalities like CBT-E and FBT.

Eating disorders and Autism often co-occur; up to 37% of individuals with eating disorders also have Autism. Unfortunately, many clinicians and providers remain unaware of this common overlap, which can negatively impact the treatment experience and outcomes for these individuals. This presentation provides an overview of Autism and eating disorders, and how the two might present. It also discusses a variety of important considerations when working with this population, including cross-collaboration with other specialties and how to modify common eating disorder interventions to align with the needs of Autistic patients.
