 We all feel the pressure to look a certain way. Be thin, but not too thin. Muscular, but not too muscular. Perfectly put together, but not like you tried too hard. Confident, but not too sure of yourself. And with the image-perfecting abilities of social media and AI, these pressures have only increased! Join us to learn more about the impact of unobtainable appearance ideals and how using cognitive dissonance – acting out new beliefs even before “believing” them – can help patients and clients explore a new relationship with their bodies while challenging societal ideals.

 After participating in this session, attendees should be able to:

The Upside of Cognitive Dissonance: Using An Evidence-Based Modality to Challenge Appearance Ideals and Support Eating Disorder Patients

Eating disorders are on the rise among college students, with risk increasing by 13% from 2013-2021. This presentation will provide campus health professionals with evidence-based strategies to identify and compassionately support students struggling with disordered eating and eating disorders.

Drawing from her own recovery journey, Equip peer mentor Jamie Drago will share her experience navigating an eating disorder as a college student. Clinical social worker Lara Effland will then outline best practices for screening, assessment, and providing resources for treatment on campus.

With real-life examples and actionable advice, this presentation aims to empower college health staff to proactively address the rising tide of eating disorders on campus. There will be time at the end for Q&A.

Identify unique risk factors and common clinical presentations of eating disorders in college populations.

Summarize recommended practices for eating disorder screening, assessment, and identification in university health services and outpatient clinical settings.

Describe strategies for providing individual and campus-wide support for students experiencing eating disorders and body image issues.

Eating Disorders on Campus: Recognizing Signs & Best Practices for Treatment in College Populations

Despite the adage that picky eating is “just a phase”, many children don’t “grow out” of their picky eating habits. This presentation will focus on helping healthcare providers understand when picky eating is harmless or developmentally appropriate - and when it crosses the line to become an eating disorder known as avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, or ARFID.
During this presentation, Dr. Jessie Menzel, clinical psychologist and VP of Program Development at Equip, discussed the factors that drive extreme selective eating, and how an understanding of these factors can inform treatment.

When Picky Eating Goes Awry: Understanding the Difference Between Selective Eating and ARFID

Atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN) is a sub-diagnosis for patients who meet all the criteria for anorexia, except for being underweight. However, the term “atypical” is a glaring misnomer, as AAN affects up to 4.9% of people during their lifetime, whereas anorexia nervosa (AN) affects about 0.6%.

Atypical anorexia became a subtype of other specified feeding and eating disorder (OSFED) in 2013, leading to many common misconceptions about the severity of the illness and its best treatment approach. Using data from a large patient population receiving virtual treatment across the US, this presentation explored these diagnostic labels, assess the severity and treatment trajectory for patients with AAN compared to AN, and propose considerations for future diagnostic clarifications.

Not so “Atypical” Anorexia: Clinical History, Diagnostic Considerations, and Treatment Approaches

Studies suggest up to 40% of people with eating disorders are boys & men, yet the harmful stereotype that eating disorders only occur in girls and women persists. Loved ones and healthcare providers are slow to recognize eating disorders in boys and men, resulting in years of unnecessary suffering. This Equip Academy presentation brought together clinical expertise and lived experience to highlight how eating disorders present in males and what treatment looks like. Live attendance was required for CE credit eligibility.

Boys and Men Get Eating Disorders Too | Equip Academy

Eating disorders affect people across the gender spectrum–in fact, they disproportionately affect transgender and non-conforming (TGNC) folks. For example, transgender college students are 4x more likely to have an eating disorder diagnosis. This Equip Academy presentation focused on building knowledge and competency for treating eating disorders within this population, will include an overview on terminology, risk factors, and symptoms. It also covered general strategies for assessing and treating eating disorders through an intersectional lens.
