Treatment of Athletes with Eating Disorders: Considerations, Conundrums, and Best Practices

About the event: Athletes are 2-3 times more likely to struggle with an eating disorder than their peers, yet they're less likely to receive a diagnosis. Research points to unique contributors like the emphasis on leanness, expected performance gains from weight changes, team weight checks, and sport-specialization at younger ages. Presented by leading research and nutritional experts on this population, this presentation will give an overview of short and long-term risks (relating to both health and performance) of eating disorders in athletes. It’ll also share evidence-based practices for management of athletes struggling with eating disorders.

There will be time for Q&A.

Learning objectives: After participating in this session, attendees should be able to:

  1. Explain why eating disorders are so pervasive among athletes
  2. Summarize the short and long-term consequences of disordered eating on health and performance
  3. Describe best practices for treatment of an athlete with an eating disorder
