Facilitating A Two-Pronged Recovery: Identifying and Treating Substance Use Disorders in Eating Disorder Patients

About the event: Research indicates about 50% of all eating disorder patients also engage in substance misuse, compared to 9% of the general population. This presentation will provide an overview of best practices for screening, assessing, tracking, and providing psychoeducation around substance use disorders (SUDs) in patients with eating disorders. Participants will learn evidence-based tools and techniques to identify substance use issues, determine appropriate levels of care, and integrate SUD treatment into existing eating disorder protocols.

There will be time for Q&A.

Learning objectives: After participating in this session, attendees should be able to:

  1. Identify validated screening and assessment tools to detect substance use disorders in eating disorder populations.
  2. Describe a structured decision tree for determining risk levels and treatment plans based on assessment findings.
  3. Explain core components of psychoeducation and skills training to address the unique needs of patients with co-occurring eating disorders and substance use issues.
