Eating Disorders on Campus: Recognizing Signs & Best Practices for Treatment in College Populations

About this event: Eating disorders are on the rise among college students, with risk increasing by 13% from 2013-2021. This presentation will provide campus health professionals with evidence-based strategies to identify and compassionately support students struggling with disordered eating and eating disorders.

Drawing from her own recovery journey, Equip peer mentor Rachel Myers will share her experience navigating an eating disorder as a college student. Clinical social worker Lara Effland will then outline best practices for screening, assessment, and providing resources for treatment on campus.

With real-life examples and actionable advice, this presentation aims to empower college health staff to proactively address the rising tide of eating disorders on campus. There will be time at the end for Q&A.

Learning objectives: After participating in this session, attendees should be able to:

  1. Identify unique risk factors and common clinical presentations of eating disorders in college populations.
  2. Summarize recommended practices for eating disorder screening, assessment, and identification in university health services and outpatient clinical settings.
  3. Describe strategies for providing individual and campus-wide support for students experiencing eating disorders and body image issues.

Lara Effland, LICSW, CEDS-S has over 15 years of experience in the field of eating disorders. Lara has played a vital role in various national behavioral health organizations and currently serves as Director of Adult Services at Equip.

Rachel Myers

Rachel Myers (she/they) is a peer mentor at Equip who works with patients of all ages recovering from their eating disorders. Tapping into her lived experience with recovery in college, Rachel helps clients with their transition to higher education, while navigating independence and self-advocacy. Rachel is also pursuing her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
