FAQ about treatment for binge eating disorder
Yes. BED is not a lack of willpower, a moral failing, or something you can just “decide” to fix. It is a diagnosable eating disorder that requires professional treatment.
One of the most common concerns patients have at the start of eating disorder treatment is wanting to lose weight or the fear of gaining it. Weight loss is never a primary goal of treatment, but some patients may end up losing weight when their nutrition becomes stabilized and they stop certain disordered behaviors.
We strongly believe that your recovery will be stronger (and treatment will be easier) if you bring your support network into the process. However, you can choose to begin treatment on your own, and then work with your team to identify and involve supports later in the process if and when you feel comfortable doing so.
