Insurance Specialist (Remote Position)

Equip is a virtual program helping families recover from eating disorders at home with comprehensive, gold-standard care created by experts in the field and people in recovery. Equip’s five-person care teams include dietitians, physicians, therapists, and mentors who deliver wrap-around support to provide families healing and lasting recovery.

About the role:

Reporting to the Controller, the Insurance Specialist holds a key role within Equip, acting as a liaison between insurance companies, the patients/families, and the Clinical Team. The specialist is responsible for managing patient insurance verification and pre-authorizations, cost of care estimates, and maintaining the RCM (revenue cycle management) database. The specialist will manage both initial and ongoing insurance authorizations and operations in collaboration with admissions and finance, ensuring accurate treatment information is communicated to both payors, patients, and internal stakeholders.

The right person will be an experienced Insurance Specialist with strong verbal and written communication. They will be process driven with a strong attention to detail. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment, solving problems independently, and comfortable with ambiguity as systems and processes are still being shaped.

What you will do:

  • Develop collaborative relationships with insurance companies/payors to verify benefits, and submit and track authorizations
  • Update/enter patient demographics, guarantor, and insurance information in company systems
  • Respond to inquiries from insurance companies, patients/families, and internal team members
  • Work collaboratively with the Controller and Billing Specialist to address preauthorization issues and any other obstacles
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient care and business
  • 3+ years of healthcare experience with billing and insurance verification
  • Knowledge and experience with EMR and billing software programs
  • Strong, professional communication and interpersonal skills with patients, clients, insurance companies, and internal team members
  • Familiarity with HIPAA privacy requirements for patient information. Ability to maintain and protect confidential information
  • Excellent organizational awareness, adaptability, and conflict management skills

Bonus if you have the following:

  • High level of understanding of behavioral health insurance and ability to explain complex benefits to families (out-of-network benefits vs. in-network benefits, as well as coinsurance, co-pays, and deductibles)
  • Accounting experience
  • Coding/Billing Certificate from an accredited institute or school preferred
  • Passion for mental health and eating disorder treatment and expanding access to treatment
